March 31st 1978: The Disappearance of Paul Rudolph Alwardt

Image
Paul Alwardt was a 17 year old boy originally from Martha's Vineyard but living in Falmouth where he worked for Melvin Reine at his waste haulage company. His mother had gone missing when Paul was a baby. With a believed drug problem, she was not able to cope with being a mother to Paul. His father, also named Paul, settled with his son in Martha's Vineyard where he grew up. Paul Senior was not without his problems either, these problems seemed to centre around alcohol and Paul Junior was left to fend for himself a lot. Paul was bullied as a child due to a deformity which caused him to have an extra row of top teeth. The constant bulling and harassment Paul received in his early years caused him to become rebellious and act out as he developed into his teens. As Paul Senior was often busy with his own life and problems, Paul spent a lot of his time hanging out on the streets and this is how he began working for Melvin Reine at his business, Five Star Enterprises. Reine had a re...

March 30th 2017: Angel of Death, Donald Harvey dies after prison attack.

Image
Born in 1952, Donald Harvey grew up in Ohio. He was the first of three children. At 6 months old his father fell asleep with him in his arms and awoke when Donald started crying having fallen and hit his head, he did not seem to be seriously injured but the soft spot on his head never closed up as he grew older. His teachers recall him being a bright boy and he performed well in class, although Harvey did seem to find the school work boring. His class mates remember him as being withdrawn and described him as a loner who would prefer to be in the company of adults rather than play games. What was unknown about Harvey at the time was that from ages 4 until about aged 11, Donald Harvey was being sexually abused by an uncle, Wayne, and a neighbour who was friends with his uncle, Dan Thomas. Thomas reportedly paid Wayne to allow him to sexually abuse the young boy.  Harvey decided to drop out of school at aged 16 but received a diploma and GED via a correspondence school based out of C...

In March of 1998 Amy Lynn Bradley was 23 years old, a recent college graduate who set out on the holiday of a lifetime with her family. Her brother Brad, her father Rod and her mother Iva decided to go on a cruise in The Caribbean. Amy was at first reluctant to go because although she was a trainer life guard, the open ocean made her nervous. Amy had gotten her degree in sports science and was planning to start her masters, this holiday was the perfect way to relax and spend some downtime with her family before continuing with her studies. Ron Bradley had actually been awarded the cruise holiday as his job from while he was working with an insurance company.  On the evening of March 23rd the family went out for dinner where the dress code was black tie, before having their meal Amy and Brad had their photo taken by the on board photographer. While they were having their photo taken their parents were sitting at the table as it was being set. Iva noted to Amy whe...

March 23rd 1998: Gerarld Stano dies by electrocution.

Image
Gerald Eugene Stano was actually born by the name of Paul Zeininger in Schenectady, New York 1951. His mother was unfortunately unable to look after him properly. At six months old his mother brought him to a local orphanage. He was severely malnourished and it is thought that he was being fed his own faeces to survive. Staff at the orphanage were horrified as they described that even at 6 months old, the baby was functioning at an animistic level and were reluctant to take the baby in as they feared he would never be adopted or fostered into a home in his current condition. It was decided that taking the baby away from the mother was a better choice. One of the women who worked in the orphanage as a nurse, Norma Stano, took pity on the infant and decided to adopt him, renaming him as the Gerald Eugene Stano that we've all come to know.  While the Stanos provided a safe and loving home for Gerald his behavioural problems continued as he grew up. He was a below average student in sc...

March 22nd 1991: The arrest of Charles Albright.

Image
Dallas in the early 90's was a booming city full of growth and prosperity in the south west but as every story has two sides, there was also a darker side to Dallas at this time. In 1991 there were over 500 homicides in the city of Dallas, their largest ever in a single year. As with most cities, there was one particular area of Dallas that was known for it's violent reputation, it was more seedy than the rest of the gleaming city and city officials at the time are believed to have been ashamed of the area, Oak Cliff, in the south of Dallas. It was a rundown area where the degenerates of Dallas seemed to flock to. During the day time hours prostitutes were seen commonly on the streets and as the sun set on Jefferson Boulevard, proceedings during the night did not get any more charming. Cops in the area monitored the area but the workers in the area were mainly known to police and many of them had drug problems which made it difficult to find help for them. Today we will be look...

March 21st 2001: Canoe Man

Image
John and Anne Darwin were living happily married in the Durham County area of England. They owned a number of homes that they rented out. Anne worked as a receptionist at a doctor's office and John was a former teacher who was now working as a prison officer. The couple owned 12 homes in Durham and were looking to expand their property portfolio when they purchased another two houses in Seaton Carew in 2000. Seaton Carew was along the coastline of The North Sea in the North East of Durham. The couple then moved into one of the homes. However, the rent they were receiving from tenants was unfortunately not enough to cover the mortgages on the houses and the couple were slowly drowning in debt.  On a cold March 21st 2002, John Darwin went out canoeing in the calm waters on The North Sea and when he failed to show up for work that day, he was reported as missing. A large search and rescue operation began in the seaside town, no sign of John was found. The following day a paddle, simil...

March 12th 2003: Elizabeth Smart is found, 9 months after her kidnapping.

Image
Elizabeth Smart was a 14 year old girl living in the affluent neighbourhood of Federal Heights in Salt Lake City with her mother (Lois), father (Edward) and siblings. She grew up in a loving Mormon family and was very much adored by those who knew her. On the 4th of June she had received an award for excellence in physical fitness and academics from school. The next morning, around 4.30 am Elizabeth's 9 year old sister, Mary Katherine, went into the room of her parents to tell them that Elizabeth was gone and they would not find her. Unsure of what she meant her parents got out of bed and began to search the house for Elizabeth, assuming that she must have woken with a bad dream and confused it with reality. Having been woken from their sleep, groggily the reality was beginning to set in, they realised that a screen in the kitchen had been cut open and Elizabeth was nowhere to be found.  When questioned Mary Katherine told police officers and her parents that she had pretended to b...
